 Abstract

Portugal, the pioneer nation in the discovery of new sea routes established commercial contacts with the different spice producing areas of the Eastern countries and derived maximum profit. The king of Portugal issued specific instructions to this effect and provided with all support to the adventurers. The European intellectual movement developed an interest in deepening the understanding of the science connected with the sea and navigation. They were the first to have understood the concept of sea-power and evolved a naval strategy for the effective control of the Indian sea. Kollam was an important maritime trading centre of the Portuguese power in Kerala.

 Abstract

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn published in 1885 is placed among the most celebrated works of American fiction. The novel directly condemns the institutionalized racism of the pre Civil- War South and tries to highlight on issues like freedom and slavery from different humanitarian angles. It was a dark period of American history that Twain examines and uncovers in minute detail through his principal characters of Huck and Jim and further explores the very essence of the idea of freedom in the American society of his time. This paper tries to highlight on the presentation of the concept of freedom in the contemporary American society of Mark Twain and explores the multiple facets of freedom offered by the so called civilized society of his time. The paper also tries to examine the different angles from which the central idea of freedom has been viewed. It further deals with the question of morality and conscience while exploring the central theme. Mark Twain definitely had a humanitarian look at all the things happening around him in the society and this paper tries to come closer to this aspect of the author’s outlook in building the narrative of Huckleberry Finn.

 Abstract

The proportion of persons dependent for their living on industries is small. The block has no important manufacturing towns. The manufacture of sugar is the only remaining industry of any importance in the block. Besides there are a few rice-mills working in the block. Agriculture is the main source of income of the people in Piparasi lock. Some agrobased industries have flourished here and are being run successfully. The last two units are closed at present. Some rice mills are also being run successfully and the produce is being marketed to different places outside the district. Cottage industries based on local available natural and agricultural produce catering the local needs such as Gur (raw-sugar), basket, rope, mat weaving etc are also popular. This research paper is to examines the issues of Rural Development Programmes under plan period. A number of studies addressed these issues and identified the relationships. The relationship is very complex and it varied from region to region. Accordingly, the development programmes implemented in the State are being restructured / reconceptualised to achieve sustainable development.
