The banking sector plays a pivotal role in the economic development of a country, and effective risk management is essential to ensure its stability and sustainability. This study explores and compares the risk management practices employed by public and private sector banks in India, focusing on identifying key differences, challenges, and best practices. The research emphasizes the importance of managing various financial and non-financial risks, including credit risk, market risk, operational risk, and liquidity risk. The study is based on a comprehensive analysis of financial data, regulatory disclosures, and the CAMELS framework over a five-year period (FY 2020-2024) for selected banks--State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Central Bank of India. It examines capital adequacy, asset quality, management efficiency, earnings quality, and liquidity, along with risk sensitivity, to assess the overall risk posture of these institutions. Findings indicate that while private sector banks demonstrate more proactive and technology-driven risk management strategies, public sector banks are gradually aligning with global best practices under regulatory pressure and digital transformation initiatives. However, significant differences remain in their risk appetites, governance structures, and response times to market volatility. The study concludes by highlighting the need for an integrated risk management framework that balances regulatory compliance with agile decision-making.
